PRECIOUS PLACES
Inspired by Luke Mancuso's discussion and interpretation of Intimate Experiences of Place by Yi-Fu Tuan our class developed a collection of Precious Places. These were defined by each individuals' idea of the word's definition and inspired by the memories that are deep an intimate to them. Most of the images below were readily available in the subjects' photo libraries.

MY PRECIOUS PLACES | ANDY KISELICA
Precious Places to me are places that hold significant value to oneself. Having something precious can be something of great material value, or many times, more importantly having great sentimental value. The following three places have been influencing and guiding me ever since the first time I had the pleasure of experiencing them.
The first image (Top Left) shows me in a field that is about a mile away from my house and is only accessible by an ATV or on foot. Where I’m sitting is one of the highest points in Madison county and I used to come here close to every day when I was growing up just to reflect and experience the “silence” of the wild countryside I grew up in and to watch the variety of animals surviving here.
The second image (Center Left) is of an addition that my father, my brother and myself built a few years ago when we got into riding Harley’s. Some of the greatest memories and the hardest lessons I will ever have of my family and friends were created here and it will always stay “precious” to me.
Finally the last image (Bottom Left) is one of my favorite pictures from my Off-Campus semester in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in the fall of 2013. The picture is of myself looking out over the neighborhood of Barra to the West of the city of Rio. We hiked the mountain of Pedra Bonita to watch the sunset with intension's of hiking Pedra Gavea (in the background) in the following weeks, but were never able to. My semester in Rio was one of the best times of my life and simply the urge to conquer Pedra is enough for me to return to Rio in the future.

Like many others precious places to can hold an assortment of different meaning to me. Whether it means spending time with others in a certain place or to be on personal exploration all precious places hold levels of greater emotional investment than all other spaces. Most recently I have found myself attached most to the places I travel.
In the past year and a half I have had the opportunity to travel to both Puerto Rico and Amsterdam, in the Netherlands where I got to live and experience the local culture firsthand. My first precious place is a river going through El Yunke, the tropcial rainforest on the island. We got lost getting to the trailhead and ended up parking atop a bridge crossing a river. With no other human beings for miles we were left to explore and climb this untamed river for hours. It was truly an experience I will always cherish.
The second is NDSM in Amsterdam. The NDSM is a converted old shipping port being repurposed for mixed use residential and commercial inside using all sorts of salvaged material such as shipping containers. But my real joy was outside the building, where they let artists from all over the world paint without restriction. It was truly amazing to see something viewed as a crime in almost all places have a given home and area. Specifically seeing the sun rise form the dock with the water reflecting the sun in the foreground and the boats and life starting to awake in the back really solidified its ranking as a precious place.

Hofbrauhaus | Kyle Buser
The Hofbrauhaus was just one of many brewery sponsored mega tents at the Munich Oktoberfest in Germany this year. As a vacation away from Amsterdam my father met me and we drove south from The Netherlands to Munich to meet with my cousins and uncle for the opening days of the three week festival. This year marked the 180th Oktoberfest in Munich. Anyone can just walk into the tents but tickets are required to get a table which becomes your base of operations throughout the day. We were lucky enough to secure tickets through our hotel to one of the tents. Inside each tent, of which there were around 15, it is a mad house. The rows upon rows of tables are packed with people sitting around them or standing on them dancing. From the kitchens, workers are constantly running massive bottles of champagne, and beer out to the bars on the floor. Once they reach the bars the drinks are quickly dispersed and more is needed. All day on a stage there are bands playing traditional Bavarian songs and also popular American songs. There are many drinking chants and toast that are roared by everyone in what feels like every ten minutes. During my time in Europe, Munich on Oktoberfest was easily the most "public" place I visited. The scale of the festival and density of people cannot be imagined through the below picture, which shows just a fraction of the Hofbrauhaus tent.

Pine Hole | Nick Imperial
I grew up on 120 acres in New York’s Mid-Hudson Valley. The land has been in the family since the 20s, and it’s where my grandfather grew up. About 70 years ago, they stopped farming the 80 or so acres on the property’s eastern slope, and it has since transitioned into a healthy hardwood forest. At the top of the hill, our property ends at Pine Hole, a flooded bog. Sometime in the 30s, apple farmers that shared borders with the bog dammed up its outlet so they could use it for irrigation. The ecosystem that resulted is, we’ve been told, very rare. Beavers must have recognized this, because they set up a few lodges and have been maintaining the dam ever since
When I was 3 years old, my father started taking me up into these woods to “cook out”. We would build campfires, cook breakfast, and he’d teach me the ways of nature. One of my earliest memories is of one of these expeditions. It was the middle of winter and the snow was well above my 4 year old knees. Complain as I might, my father insisted that we press on and, by the time we reached the campsite and built a fire, my feet were so cold that there was no way I could be convinced to take my boots off to warm them. I think I was probably pretty miserable at the time, but my memory of the experience has always been positive; an important adventure of my early years.
Our campsite changed locations a few times over the years, and now it sits on Pine Hole’s shore. This winter, my father and I recreated this fateful trip, heading up the hill with the usual supplies, plus a shotgun, some clay pigeons, and a 4-wheeler to carry it all. With temperatures around 5°F, this time I was the driving force behind the excursion. It was great to cook out together again, not having done so for several years, and I finally understood the significance this place has had in my relationship with my father.

A place can only be labeled "precious" by the user experiencing the site. It is not possible to understand what makes a place precious to an individual without understanding their sentiment. In that sense, it may be impossible to ever truly understand ones connection to a precious place
Plitvice lakes is a breathtaking national park in central Croatia. The 16 cascading lakes are connected by numerous waterfalls, a product of several streams and subterranean karst rivers. The water is crystal clear, not unlike Green Lakes St. Park- and ranges in color from blues to gray-green. I spent 3 days hiking this park with my girlfriend during a backpacking trip through the country. The adventure and experience in this surreal landscape is what makes this place precious to me.

My idea of a precious place comes with two different meanings. The first one being a place that holds a lot of cherished memories. A location that you know very well and where even the mention of the name or a word that relates to the place automatically makes you connect it back to a memory. The second definition being a place that you may aimlessly come up upon or have never seen before and it just makes you stop and appreciate what you are experiencing.

Personal Definition:
A location that hold memories for an individual. The individual feels tied to the location usually for sentimental reasons, because it inspires awe or is unique for whatever reason.
Based on that definition, I chose Clinton Square, Syracuse NY as my precious place.

In the winter time, my family always goes skating on Christmas Day at the ice rink after opening presents in the morning and before Christmas dinner. It is also one of the winter activities for friends of mine that come home from college over winter break.
The landscaping company I used to work for installed and maintained the front court yard of the Clinton Exchange building that faces Clinton Square.
Throughout grade school, the Erie Canal was a topic of many research projects and history units. I learned repeatedly how the canal used to run right through Clinton Square and how the current fountain pays homage to this historical space.

This place, the town of Füssen in the Bavarian Alps, is precious to me for a variety of reasons: beauty, comfort, and the time I found it.
In contrast to many other places I might consider precious I spent only a day in Füssen. At the end of an exhausting week of traveling I arrived in the town where I finally felt comfortable and had some time to relax.
After weeks of living in pancake flat and dense Amsterdam it was refreshing to be in a place with some topographic interest and have some space away from other people.
So, even though my experience in this place is limited the reasons it is precious to me, comfort and beauty, are the same reasons I would consider places I am more familiar with to be precious as well.

A Place that is Precious to me is usually steeped in personal investment and involves some sort of emotional attachment. A strong connection, whether it be a nostalgic or ongoing relationship, has to have been made for a place to become precious to me.
Over the period of 3 months when I was in Amsterdam, Vondelpark became one of my favorite places to explore, relax, and bike in. The atmosphere of this place reminded me so much of Central Park back at home, which I immediately took to heart. I have had picnics with friends on grass fields overlooking ponds and have sat alone under trees sketching the surrounding scenery. The sun always shines brighter and the grass always smell sweeter in Vondelpark.
The act of drawing and spending so much time in Vondelpark has fostered an emotional attachment; I can pinpoint exactly on a map where each drawing was done, the weather conditions at that time, and how long I spent in the park that day.

A five minute walk from my parent's house in Irondequoit, NY is Durand Eastman Park. Sandwiched between Lake Ontario and the City of Rochester, this 977 acre park facilitated countless dog walks, Senior portrait photo sessions, and memorable group gatherings. Visiting Durand every chance I get when I'm in Rochester, I have established certain areas of the park I like to use during different seasons (shown in the images below). Even though it changes seasonally, the park remains permanent in it's location and structure. In addition, it is open and free to use by anyone, making it's identity adaptable per it's user.
I know I can come here a few months from now, or even years, and I'll still be able to recall past thoughts and memories, comparing and contrasting them. Thus, giving me the ability to remind myself of who I was then and who I am now.

My precious place is one that fosters endless identity.
It is "precious" because of my identity association. As humans, we are constantly changing. Affected by other experiences, opportunities, and influences beyond our precious places, our sense of self is altered through time.
Despite my own identity alterations, this precious place transcends time. It's endlessness, not only in my memory, but in it's own adaptable identity, which allow me to keep revisiting and remembering it throughout my dynamic life.

MY PRECIOUS PLACES| XIN JIN HUANG
A precious place to me is a space that brings back memories of happiness, comfort, excitement, and safety. It is often linked to nostalgia, as most of these spaces are from my childhood. Unfortunately, my most precious place no longer exists, making it even more important to me.
I grew up near the outskirts of Guangzhou, China on a cantilevered house over a small river (similar to the picture on the left). Memories of fishing and rock skipping during my early childhood have fostered a fascination with waterfronts within my professional career.
When I returned to China as a teenager, I could barely believe how much my childhood home changed. Industrialization and lack of environmental regulations polluted the river beyond recognition. I could barely see the surface of the water because it was filled to the top with floating trash and debris. I was told a few years later that the river became so polluted that the local municipality filled it with dirt and concrete.

Precious places bring about precious memories. Places with great memories are events in a moment of your life that remain photographed in your mind. The places in Colombia and Hawaii have about tied memories of my family. Sand Andres brings about memories of my father. Hawaii brings about memories of my younger sister and the significance of this event in her life, Along with the memory of my mother and Daniel. Syracuse brings memories of many events, people, and beautiful places around the world. These memories are then added to the collection of precious places in my mind.

Merriam-webster defines precious as something of great value, highly esteemed, or cherished. When referring to a place or space as precious, there are a number of factors that should be considered. For instance, places can be precious to one individual without the same view being held by another. I think there are different types and scales of precious places.
A place that is precious to me is the lake that I grew up on. I cherish the moments I have spent kayaking through thick fog on the mirror-like surface. Lake Champlain provides a place for me to boat, fish, kayak, skate and ski. The lake has also been the source of my most terrifying life experience, but still remains of great value to me. I have also provided examples of places that I know are cherished by others, but not necessarily me. The water pump is a source of life. It is the most important destination in most of Northern India's rural communities. The burning ghat in Varanasi is a precious holy place to much of the Indian population. To an outsider, the buildings blackened with soot from human cremations, and the raging polluted Ganges may be disturbing. Another type of precious place is the national icon. The US Capitol is symbolic and important to many Americans, but I would not say visitors would see the same in it. Places can be precious to individuals, groups, masses, nations, or even the world. |

The geographer Yi-Fu Tuan defines place as "a center of meaning constructed by experience." The experiences that create a sense of place are "mostly fleeting and undramatic, repeated day after day and over the span of years. It is a unique blend of sights, sounds, and smells, a unique harmony of natural and artificial rhythms such as times of sunrise and sunset, or work and play. The feel of place is registered in one's bones and muscles."

In a small world like the earth, they are tons of spaces occupied by humans. Those spaces become places when they are filled with meaning and memories. For me, those places become home, and home is wherever my heart is with the people I love the most, my family. Sweden was just another Nordic country where nobody really goes to, specially during the winter, but when my aunt move there, Sollentuna became part of home. Other places are where
Other Places become "home-base" where the family unites. They are places where so much emotions come together and some times it is bigger than emotions than words cannot even described. Precious places are from precious moments.
MY PRECIOUS PLACES| ZACH KALETTE
The most significant precious places in my life are the ones that give me an overwhelming sense of awe when I think about the memories I created there. Often times these are memories from my childhood where I have everlasting mental images of scenes and events that happened years ago.
I attended Camp Iroquois from when I was about 4, until junior year of high school, as both a camper and a camp counselor. This landscape is literally a shrine to my childhood. Just a mile from the house I grew up in, Green Lakes is also one of those places I spent ample time throughout my life. Nowadays when I spend time there I can see myself playing in the sand, and walking on the paths, and playing in the water as a small kid causing problems! Lastly, I only worked this past summer on the golf course, but it quickly became a place than stands alone for me. I started would at the crack of 5am everyday, and I experienced the landscape in ways I hadn't before, simply because it was so early, and before most of society woke up for the day. Quiet, serene, peaceful, are words that come to my mind when I was by myself just gazing over the land. |

A place can only be labeled "precious" by the user who is experiencing the site. It is the the activation of various senses that leaves a lasting impression upon the user. It is not possible to understand what makes a place precious to an individual without knowing and understanding their sentiment. In that sense, it may be impossible to ever truly understand ones connection to a precious place.
MY PRECIOUS PLACES| KYLE BUSER
When we first think about what is precious place, it is usually somewhere that has affected you on a personal level. For example the house I grew up in, or where I went to high school. In fact many people put the same value on places that you have and the scale begins to grow. The importance of some places can grow in scale from the personal level, to town, region, or nation. Another way to consider it is the scale of the place itself. For example there are thousands of places in NYC that people might consider to be precious to them, but they are all in NYC so does that make the city precious to the overall region? My three photos of places on the Hudson River come together to create a larger precious place on a regional scale, the Hudson Valley. The places are Bannermans Island, Bear Mountain Bridge/ Harriman State Park, and West Point.

MY PRECIOUS PLACES| KRISTY PEDERSEN
To me a precious place is one that is either irreplaceable because of sentimental, nostalgic value or because of its inherent natural beauty. For the former, I find Brockway Island in the middle of the Connecticut River holds a lot of value because I spent so much time there as a child. Almost every weekend over the summer we would take boat rides out there to have a barbecue and play beach games. However to someone else this place could be meaningless and it is often disregarded. For the latter, there is something beautiful about the untouched landscapes in Puerto Rico. During my time over winter break my host family brought me to an amazing waterfall with lots of coves and cliffs. There was hardly anyone there and there were no built structures. I would be sad if either of these places were altered because -in my mind- there is nothing any one could change to make them better.

MY PRECIOUS PLACES| NICK IMPERIAL
Riverby, West Park, New York My friends Sean and Tanner grew up on this property. Their great grandfather, John Burroughs lived here and built the stone and concrete mansion that they are now living in with little electricity and no running water. I’ve spent many, many hours here, working on old, unusual cars and trucks, rolling tires down the steep hill that leads to the banks of the Hudson River, setting off fireworks, building structures and playing music. Although I have no ownership of this property, I feel very connected to it. It has become a part of my history and being. A Nice Place, Highland, New York This is the cabin my great-great uncle built on my family property in the 20s. A professional engineer, he constructed it very well and stands strong and even after all these years. A few summers ago I fixed it up, hooked up running water and lived here for a summer. The cabin has always been a part of my life, even more so now that I’ve taken part in its upkeep. Bernadette, Green St & 8th, New York, NY This is the corner my band parked our bus (Bernadette) on during the summer of 2008. 5 of us lived and slept on this bus, on this corner in extreme filth and discomfort. It was great. We developed a strong connection to this corner washing up in the Johnny Rocket’s bathroom there, making friends with the locals (the Johnny Rocket’s manager would argue with the meter maid for us) and, although I’m rarely there anymore, I still feel like a certain part of it belongs to me. |

Wellington, New Zealand Wellington is where my family is from. I am only able to visit every four or five years, so it is a place I cherish when I am there. It is a beautiful city on the water and surrounded by lush hills. |
Carnlough, Northern Ireland
My distint relatives are from Carnlough. My great grandmother left Carnlough to start a new life in New Zealand, but some of my distint cousins still life on the farm she grew up on. I visited Carnlough in 2008 and got to see where my great grandmother grew up. It was easy to see why she choose to settle in hills of Wellington. |
Crystal River, Florida
Crystal River played an important role in my childhood. It was a place where I felt total engrossed in nature. I swam with manatees in crystal clear water. I have visited Crystal River three times, but have not been back since high school. |
Precious Places

I think of a precious place as somewhere that evokes a warm emotion. A place that is endearing with individual personal associations.
I chose three places that are very special to me and that I could visit over and over again. The first one is Pine Point Beach. My family spends almost everyday on this beach in the summer. As my siblings and I have gotten older we no longer live at home but we always go back there together when we get the chance. The second picture is the end of the Appalachian Trail. Knife Edge is one of the ways down from the peak of Mt. Katahdin. I used to be absolutely terrified of the trail but I have grown to love it and the feeling of accomplishment of after hiking it is what makes it so precious to me. The last picture os of Quincy Market in Boston. I love the energy of Quincy Market and find it endlessly entertaining. Visiting around Christmas is especially beautiful.

When I think of a precious place, two meanings come to mind. The first is a place that brings back many fond memories you have had at this place. The second is a place that creates or leaves an impression with you.
Great Falls
This National Park is located on the Potomac River that separates Maryland and Virginia. The park hosts many trails through the woods and bridges suspending over the river. This place brings back many memories of times I've spent exploring the park. I've spent countless hours discovering what the place has to offer, from scaling large rocks to traveling off the beaten paths.
Needwood Lake
This park is located in Montgomery County Maryland. With the lake being over 75 acres in size, it has held many memories of kayaking, canoeing, and summer camping. From grade school through the end of high school, I spent 7 great summers at this park attending and counseling an outdoor summer camp. This place created many great memories with a lot of great people
Onondaga Lake
This photo was taken in February on the North end of the lake looking towards the city of Syracuse. I thought this was a good example of a place that leaves a lasting impression with you. This photo is place enclosing an untouched landscape. It demonstrates the great power of nature presenting winters frozen lake and fresh fallen snow.

Precious Places

I feel that personal history with a place, childhood memories in particular, provides a sense of preciousness to me. The memories created from these places will always be a part of me, so in a way, the places I remember will always be a part of whom I am as well.
